We have done a few interesting projects with Thomson Marconi Sonar Pty. Broadly they fall into the following categories.

More on TMS Training

Project:

TMS required interactive training modules that employees could take any time. The modules needed to maintain the interest and meet the needs of a diverse group of employees: people working in manufacturing, clerical staff, engineers, management etc. Budgets were tight. The use of The Learning Group's Learning.clip technology helped to lower the cost of development. The Learning.clip was customised for TMS with the type of look and feel and functionality needed in their environment. This customised Learning.clip is now available for TMS to use in all future developments.

Specific Projects:

  1. TMS Pty Orientation - orientation training for weekly and monthly employees.
  2. Quality Assurance training - An introduction to Quality Assurance at TMS and the ISO 9001 requirements. This training also covers such areas as Quality Audits and how to prevent Electrostatic Discharge.

Our Brief:

  • provide streamed training - TMS has two groups of employees - weekly and monthly - and as such, their training needs differ. The modules stream employees, based on the way in which they sign on to the modules. Relevant training content is then provided to each group.
  • use multimedia - use plenty of audio and graphics to support and enhance the training. TMS did not want employees to read large amounts of text on screen. We tried to keep it quick and interesting.
  • provide navigation structures relevant to the training - training is presented sequentially where necessary, and allows freedom of movement whenever possible. In addition, progress is marked and allows for easy review of materials previously experienced.
  • introduce all senior management - in the orientation module, employees have the opportunity to hear from senior management who present information and examples about each of the various business areas. This content - photos and audio - needed to be easily updateable.
  • externalise changeable information - no one wants to go back to the training supplier every time every little thing changes. So, we externalised the dynamic information in a format that was easily updateable by the client.
  • provide interesting statistics and trivia - a lighter side to their training - employees learn little known and often fascinating facts about their organisation from each member of the senior management team.

Interesting Bits:

  • pictures of all the "boy's toys"- most of our other orientation training modules don't allow us the leeway to add in photos of subs, sonars, frigates and RAAF planes, let alone provide them to us at the outset - (our graphics people and developers got to do what they had only dreamed of in the past...)
  • working with the two Peters- Peter Bunn & Peter Quinlan - both wonderful to work with! Touring TMS - Part of the initial information gathering session included tours of the production facilities. Our thanks to Peter Bunn for organising that.
  • learning something new - as with all our projects, we get to learn a lot. At TMS we learnt a little about an industry leader in a highly specialised and fascinating industry. As for the Quality module, learning about Quality is useful no matter what industry you're in.
  • working with an international company - TMS has its headquarters in France. Given our client's French Managing Director, we couldn't help but experience a little of the French culture!
  • dangers of ESD - Illustrating the effects of electric shock on humans… Ouch!

More on TMS Website

Project:

After we produced the TMS Orientation training, TMS approached us about developing a corporate web site for them. They required a small, but comprehensive, web site that was to be their first step onto the web. TMS in Australia did not have a web presence and needed to talk with people that not only understood the web, but who could also help them with their first site.

Our Brief:

  • assist with the design & implementation of the site -TMS required someone to help them design their on-line presence from the ground up.
  • speed is a factor - we needed to be cognisant of the download time in our information design. The site is structured in such a way that makes it quick and easy to go directly to all the different types of content - without having to click through multiple levels.
  • incorporate the TMS Pty corporate look and feel.
  • new content - static content is death on the web! To keep the customers coming back we included a "Newsroom" feature, which will include the latest press releases about TMS.

Interesting Bits:

  • learning about the different types of sonars - building this site was like taking a crash course in modern sonar recognition! Since this is a public site, you will be able to check it out soon.
